Different Accents and How to Prepare for Them

There are many different accents used in the Ielts listening test. And the only way to become familiar with the regional pronunciation of words is to practice listening to them.
The most common accents in the Ielts exam are;
  • The Standard British accent
  • Regional English, Scottish and Welsh accents
  • Regional Irish accents
  • The Australian accent
  • The American accent
  • The Canadian accent

The Standard British Accent

Here is a great example of the classic British accent that you might be familiar with from the BBC. The video includes subtitles if you have difficulty.
More good examples of a variety of British accents can be found in the BBC archive. The documentary section will give you good practice for the Ielts listening test and all the different dialects that can come up.
